British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.
The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
During December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
