Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
